3 Reasons for Teaching
I HATE THIS SO MUCH.
Why? Because introductory conversations always go like this:
Me: I’m a history teacher.
Person: Oh, you’re a teacher! It must be so nice to get summers off.
THANKS FOR IGNORING EVERY OTHER ASPECT OF MY JOB. Do I say: “Oh, you’re a (insert job here)? It must be nice to have your weekends off not grading papers!!!!!!!!!!” NO. Also, what am I doing this summer? Working part time, grad classes, and restructuring my curriculum for next year.

amen.
That ‘person’ is my dad. He ALWAYS complains about how teachers get paid so much money on Long Island (which is true — there are very few teachers in my district that make <$50,000 a year), and on top of being supplied health insurance and pensions at a huge cost to taxpayers, they get three months “off” during the summer.
Coming from a man who owns a business and works 80 hours a week year-round, I can see where he’s coming from. I mean, my family owns a business..I’m “supposed” to dislike unions and ‘cushy’ jobs like teaching. Yes, I dislike unions — well, actually, I dislike what they’ve become (not what they were originally created for) — but oh man, if only he knew how difficult teaching actually is..
